HAMILTON WEST SCHOOL CONCERT.
The annual concert Riven by the pupils attending the Hamilton West Public School, was held in tbe Volunteer Hall, Hamilton West, on Thursday evening and in every way was an unqualified success, and we think that all the trouble and care boa towed by the teachers on their charges was amply rewarded by the manner in which the children acquitted themselves, and the applause which their efforts received at the hands of the audienso. The stage was brilliantly lighted, and tastefully dressed with evergreens, flags, and screen, and on which the children were for the first part arranged in a crescent, Tho absence of a drop scene was Rreatly felt, especially in the after pieces, Bluebeard and Fairy Freaks, The first part of the programme opening with a pianoforte duet by Misses Murray and Jones, consisted of chorus, and part .singing and recitation, all of which were creditably rendered by tho youthful performers. The gem of the eveuing, undoubtedly, was the double trio, "Rock Me to Sleep, Mother." In this tho alto part by Master T. Jolly was exceptionally good for one so youn?. Miss S. Harwood was tcry successful in tho recitation, " Becalmed," and at its conclusion she was showered with bouquets. This portion whs under the direct supervision of Miss W. Murray, and she may be congratulated on the results. After a somewhat lengthy interval the play. " Bluebeard," was staged, the representation being the discovery by Fatima (Miss Jeannie Edgecmnbe), lured on by her sister Annie (Miss V. Graham), during the absence of Bluebeard, her husband (Master J. Harris), of the heads of his former wives, and her subsequent rescue by Selim (Master T. Kirk), from Bluebeard, who had, on finding out that she had made the ghastly discovery, threatened her with the same fate. Jeannie Edgecumbe made a charming Fatima, and carried out her part to perfection, being ably snpported by Violet Graham. Miss Maggie Elliott, during the interval, recited with great credit, " Curfew must not ring to-night." " Fairy Freaks" was then put on the boards, the plot being the working of the fairies on a Mr Grump plaster T. Jolly), who was noted for his grumpiness, and rendering him a useful member of society. Miss Barry, who had charge of this latter portion of the programme, must have worked untiringly to have brought the children to such perfection, and she must indeed feel that her labour had good fruits. Before the singing of the National Anthem by the children, Mr W. A. Graham in the absence of the chairman, thanked the teachers for the manner in which they had brought the children out, and the audience for their attendance.
