(by telegraph.—press association.) DUNEDIN, Friday. George McGavin, the well known brewer, and head of tho firm McGavin Smith and McGregor was fined £23 atid costs, and ordered to pay treble tax for forwarding an incorrect statement to the Property Tax Commissioner. At the Baptist Conference, the Rev. Thos. Spurgeon delivered an address in regard to the proposed plan of evaniralestic work, and accepted the call from the Union to engage in this service. It mentioned he had promised to visit Tasmania, and he would fulfill that promise, but would take up work here in the middle of next year. Promises towards the guarantee fund were received in the room amounting to £194. The Treasurer's report showed receipts, £250; and expenditure ; £135. NELSON, Friday. At a meeting the railway employees protested against the proposed Government insurance scheme as unjust and arbitrary, tantamount to a reduction in wages, and as calculated to interfere with benefit societies. It was decided to form a branch of the Amalgamated Society of railway servants.
