(by telegraph.—own correspondent). Auckland, Friday. The Frozen Meat Company and the butchers have made final anangements under which the former retire from the retail trade, and the latter take the surplus meat of the company of good quality only. One uniform scale price will now rule in the city and suburbs. The new prices commence on Monday next, and the advance is from J,d to Id per lb. Alterations have also been made in the credit system ; formerly the butchers had the privilege of a month's credit from the cattle salesmen, now only seven days' credit is given. This applies to the arrangement with the Freezing Company. At the Board of Education meeting today, it was stated that a telegram had been received during the week from the Educational Department at Wellington, asking if extra holidays were to be granted on account of the anniversary celebrations. A reply was sent, informing the Department that no extra holidays were necessary, as the celebration falls within the regular vacation. This morning about seven o'clock a house atAvondale, occupied by Captain Elliott, shipping agent, was totally destroyed by fire. A small portion of the furniture was saved.
