HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The usual monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, at 7.30, on Tuesday evening.

There were present: The Mayor, Mr Jones in the chair, and Crs. Salmon, Wood, Davey, Bell, Parr and Scott. The minutes of the last ordinary, adjourned and special meetings were read and confirmed.

Slaughtering License.—Mr Thomas Cassidy applied for a license to slaughter cattle on Lot 4111, Hamilton East. The Clerk reported that the applicant had complied with the provisions of the Act, and the license was granted.

Sl'ijsidy.—Notification was received that the subsidy accruing to tho Borough was £57 7s ud, but that £12 had been deducted for unpaid audit accounts, and the balance, £45 7s 5d paid in to the credit of the Borough.

Balance Sheets.—The Clerk reported that the half-yearly balance sheets had been received from tile Audit office certified to as correct.

Auiht Fee.—A demand for £7 was received from tho Audit, office for the last audit.

Culvert. —Mr T. Ghappell applied for a culvert to be put across the watertable, and for the drain to be filled in, in front of his property in Grey Street. Hamilton East, so as to give him access to it. The Mayor reported that be had had the ditch tilled in with the material taken from the watertables, and he considered the culvert was necessary.—Cr. Salmon moved that Mr Chappell's application for a culvert ba granted. Seconded by the Mayor and carried.

Swimming Classes.—Professor J". G. Pannell applied for the exclusive use of the Hamilton West Bath from 10 to lla.tn., and 2. 30 to 3. 30 p.m. in order to allow hitn to conduct classes for pupils. The pupils of course to pay the usual fees. This matter was held over until the tenders for caretaker were considered.

Roll.—Mr J. S. Edgecumbe agent for Rev. J. Burrows wrote requesting that Mr J. G. Pannell's name He substituted for his for lots 41!), 420, on tho valuation roll. Mr I. Coates also requested that Mr J. Bolton's name be substituted for his on the the roll for lot 73. The first application was granted, but the second was held over until after the Mayoral election.

J urn leu Square.—Mr T. King wrote offering to keep J übilee Square in order to July 30th, 18S)0 for £o. Mr King's olt'er was accepted on the motion of Cr. Salmon seconded by Cr. Purr.

Verandahs.—Mr TV (Jualtrough was granted peimission to erect a verandah across the footpath in front of hits shop, Victoria-street. —Cr. Scott called the Council's attention to the damage done to tho footpaths by the water dropping from the verandahs which only go half-way across the footpath, owing to there being no piping round the verandahs.—After some discussion the matter dropped, no action being taken.

Works.— The Foreman of Works reported that during the month the following works had been done -Repairs to culverts, furze cut on Lot 413. repairs to river road, crossing* erected in front of Mayes', Monro's and Waito's properties, drains past 1 ley's cleaned out, portion of Victoriastreet gravelled, and sundry smaller jobs carried out. —The report was received.--Cr. Salmon moved that if the Council have the necessary pipes in stock 1 hoy be put in the drain in Hood-street, on condition that M.r P. Monro tills the ditch up, the Works Committee being appointed to inspect the place with power to act.—Seconded by Cr. Scott and cariied.

Pound.—The poundkeoper's report, referred hack at last meeting, was returned corrected. The report for October showed that there had been two horses and five cattle impounded, and £1 -Js received in fees. One horse and several cattle had been sold, but ill each case the price realised was less than the fees due.

Enpowmkxts.—The committee appointed to report with reference to the unlet endowments recommended as follows :—That Lot 255, half-acre, near the old pound, he put up for lease for five years at an upset price of ill per annum ; that Lots 31, 32 and 3S!), opposite Mr Jones', be put. up for lease for 21 years, at an upset price of £1 per acre per annum, under special conditions—viz., that a lioune be erected at a cost of not less than £100 ; that Lots l!)i), 205 and 210, near the cemetery, be put up for lease for 11 years, at an upset price of os per acre per annum"; that Lots 443Jand 443 a be put up for lease for five years at an upset price of £1 per acre per annum. The report was received and adopted.

Accounts. —The following payments wore authorised: —Messrs Chaniptaloup and Cooper, £110s ;W. Dey, 5s !)d ;T. W. Maunder, 18s ; E. T. Darey, Xs (id ; T. <!. Saudes, £2 2s ; T. King, i)s : Manktelow, 7s Gil; G. Mayes, £1 ss; R. Waite, £110s lid ; Peacock, 8s; C. LeQucsne, 19s.

Baths. —Only one tender, that of Joseph Hintoil, senior, at Is per day and all tolls, was received for caretaker to the baths.— Cr. Parr moved that the tender be not accepted.—Seconded by the Mayor and carried.—Cr. Parr moved that a competent caretaker be appointed for the season, and that the late caretaker, Mr Panncll, be appointed at a salary of £10, together with the whole receipts from the batiis, with the understanding that he is not to charge for children '.mder 14 years of age —Seconded by Cr. Salmon.—Cr. Bell moved as nil amendment that the matter be deferred till after the mayoral election and that in the meantime the baths be closed. —Seconded by Cr. Davcy and carried, the voting being : —For: Tho Mayor, Crs. Bell, Davcy, Scott and Wood. Against : Crs. Salmon and Parr. The motion was then put and lo«t, the voting being vice versa.

Saluyauds.--It was left in the hands of the Mayor to get a few small repairs done at the Kaleyards.

Si,Ai:(iirL'Ei;iXi; Fees. ■ - The fees for slaughtering cattle in the borough were fixed at half the maximum fees as provided for in the by-laws.

Fencing.—lt was decided to purchase sufficient fencing from the Domain Board at Ns (id per chain to foneu in lints 4-J3 and ■u::a. This concluded the business.
