The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.

TUESDAY, NOV. 5, 1889.

Equal and cxact justice to all men, Ot whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political.

The revenue returns for the quarter ended September 30, give satisfactory indications of the continued improvement of the colony. The total ordinary revenue during the quarter was .£838,212, as compared with £741,286 for the corresponding quarter of 1888, or an excess of receipts of nearly £9-1,000. The territorial revenue exceeded that of the same period last year by £33,400, thus making the total increase of revenue for the quarter over £127,000. Taking the separate heads of departmental income, we find that in Customs there was an increase of £52,550 ; Stamps, £13,750 ; Postal and Telegraphs showed a decrease in cash receipts of £2,750; Property-tax decreased by £3,875 ; Beer Duty gave an increase of £1,750 ; Railways increased by £22,100 ; Registration, £4,250; and miscellaneous revenue, £5,280. The expenditure during the quarter amounted to over £504,000, and exceeded that of the corresponding quarter of 1888 by over £22,200. Almost all the departments show an increase in expenditure, which looks inexplicable in the face of the reductions and retrenchment claimed to have been made in the cost of the public service by the Government. Whilst the Legislative department showed a decrease of £915, Postal and Telegraphs, £3,834, and Defence £6,325 ; the cost of the Colonial Secretary's department increased by £6,000; Colonial Treasurers by £2,852; Justice, by £1,765 ; Trade and Customs by £2,730; Stamps, £424 ; Education, £959 ; Native, £1,147 ; Lands and Mines, £1,694 ; Railways, £15,711 ; and Public Works" £129.
