The IFtiihtin Tiitms OShv, Wednesday. SYDNEY MARKETS. Mkshi:* I.).\i/;etty akd Co. Retort, under ible l-tli Octobcr, ISB9 :—Wheat : 'L'ho position taken early in the seusnu by merchants and farmers holding with nn exaggerated idea, of prices Inter on will result in a great disappointment as our market ha.'s been gradually weakening, the quality of shipments generally also do not meet millers' requirements, and they are only inclined to use these for mixing in sin ill proportions. Large quantites are also now coining forward (and so further burdening the market) which might have been placed more favourably earlier in the season. Flour ; The market is heavily overstocked with every sort of brand, and to effect sales prices have to be accepted which cannot be profitable to producers owing to the large arrivals of Californian wheats and flours from which the local millers have been producing very superior bakers' flour. New Zealand brands are most sparingly used. MELBOURNE GRAIN MARKET. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report tinder date Melbourne, October 9th : —Since our last •weekly report there has been a tendency towards improved prices in the wheat market, due to the fact that most of the available lots in store have been cleared out. Sydney has also been a buyer, it being ijund necessary to use Victorian wheat in milling Californian shipments to give that strength which is required in tha flour during warmer weather. Some 20,000 bags, it is Baid, have been taken up on this account, whilst the Elsie has cleared with 3.500 bags for that port. The quostion of country stocks still remains a factor of great uncertainty, and on this the immediate future of prices depend. Crop prospects are still good, though fear of rust on the low-lying lands in some districts are already entertained. Owing to the good season the wheat, as well as all other grain crops, is rather too forward, and lias made heavy stalk, and this, whilst giving tho promise of plenty of straw, will also endanger crops being lain by the action of •storms. The question of tonnage still i.s one of simo anxiety, and the prospects of a supply of handy vessels for tho new crop aro poor, whilst freights are likely to open high.—Wheat : The market has been stronger during tho last few days, and prima samples are scarce. To-day wo sold prime at 5s Id to os 2d ; medium to good, 4s 7id to Is lid.—Flour; A moderate demand for bakers' lots, and a little more done for export. Stone-made is quoted at £10 15s to .I'll, whilst roller i.s placed from £'12 upwards.—Oats : Prices hardened a little at i,hn close of last week, but tho market is still unsettled. Today, 3s 5J to .'is (id taken for feed lots. CHRISTCUCRCH GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS. Muss;;-; Kavij ani> CabtkhV Risvort for week ending Oct. 21st.
