HARAPIPI SCHOOL MATTERS.
TO THE EMTOK. SlU,— This genial .spring woather has brought my old friend the llarpipi " Own Correspondent," out of liis hole again ; and I am Horry to find that the long rest he has enjoyed has. not improved his temper. I will'proceed to correct a few trifling mistakes that occur in his letter, and to state a few facts, which hn, ti" doubt, has entirely forgotten. Mr McGuirk never made any request whatever, as to Mr Thompson's admittance, but simply muttered two or three unint.olliu'iblo words, and walked out and led him in, thereby ignoring the whole committee including the chairman, and constituting himself the conimitte as I have no doubt hi> always believed himself to be, The committee, that is self-consiituted one, certainly usked the chairman to resign, but tlio motion fell fl it tor want of a seconder. However the chairman will resign when asked to do .so by a majority of his committee, and what is more, he will not cry at the loss of his honours. Ths proposition to remove the To Knro School, did not originate in, but wa« submitted to, me. I approved and promised my support. ThN happened 12 months before I became chairman of the Harnpipi Committee, My bein;? so would not, be sufficient justification for breaking faith with my friends and neighbours of Th Kore. I have bsen over 20 years is the district. I have not interferred in local nffuirs for the last 10 years or more. Mr Thompson has vilified mo to my face and in your columns fur my apathy ; selfishness, I think he onlled it (but the choice of a word is nnthinsr) now I am holding an honourable office for a few months he wants me to retire into private life again. What inconsistency ! He has been chairman for years and held another office as well, that of chief contractor to the committee. An accommodating chairman who does small jobs, &c, &c, fnr a trifling remuneration must be a great boon to an indolent sort of a school committee The combination office may suit Mr Thompson but I will have none of it; [ would go without a shirt first. The llarapipi Mnjor-Dorno was well aware of my sentiment* when he proposed me as chairman. Ho will deny this -has done so •already in my hearing ; but the fact of a person denying a thing makes it no less the truth. As t>> the tail of the Tβ lloro party being the most suitable place for Mr .lames, I should like to say this ni'icli—had Mr J. 11. Thompson been in that position the Te Kore party would not havehpsitated to part with their tail to get rid of his company ; and, further, it would uut tako the cunning fox of the old fable to persuadj the.Harapipi people to follow suit. The truth is, Mr Thompson did not come to the meeting to discuss school matters so much as to discuss my private affairs. The subject of removal of Tβ Rove school I leave to tho head men. Being the tail I cannot resist tlie temptation to take a flip at the flies that are buziiinpr about. Dr Pomposity of Harapipi says, inEerentially, in his letter of the 17th inst tnt that the Te kore men are "d d rogues." Well I well ! they may be a bit roguish sometimes, but it is quite harmless. I don't believe for a minute they would rob a church plate or Hcuttlea ship, as I have heard old Pomposity aver some of-the Harapipi men have done, or are callable of doing, I'm not certain which. There is any quantity of mud loft in Harapipi yet, but I vill stop raking, otherwise the pages of your clean paper will become so dirty that folks will not be able to read it without spectacles.— I am etc, W. H. James. Te Kore, October 188!).
