Retuun. —The Survey Department; in order to comply with instructions to furnish a report, requested a return of all the flax, flour, timber mills, and dairy factories in the County. Road.—Mr Phillipson wrote, requesting the Council to open up a road unto the Matahura Valley, between lots 1 and 280. This matter was settled by the action of the Council re the Matahura Road. Us lid in debt; riding account, Rangiriri, £72 13s S!A ; Kirikiriroaj £1 11s Did ; Tamahere, £33 2s lid ; Cambridge, £08 15a 9d in credit; Cambridge Town District, £78 18s 3d ; and Agricultural College site.account, £151 11s 5d in debit. The following accounts were passed for payment:—Johnson, £110s; Forrest, 10s; Hospital Board, £107 13s 7d ; Kirk, £1 4< ; Wilson and Horton, £1; petty cash, £4 13s 10d ; R. Storey, £21; Engineer, £1 18s 10d ; Vincent. £1 10s.

Matahdua Road.—Or. Johnson reported that he had met Messrs Reid and Hill and they had refused to accept compensation fot the road. He offered to recommend the Council to grant £50 as compensation. The settlers sooner than have the road other than as described in the petition presented at last meeting had agreed to do any fencing, through Mr Hill's property rendered necessary by taking this road. Where the road is wanted is mostly through unimproved land, and the road would enhance its' value. In taking this road another one would be given in its place. The bridge on this road would come between Hill's house and the Maori whares, and the bridge would require to be longer than the one on Mr Sandes deviation, He moved that the road be takeu through under the Public Works Act, in accordance with the petition.—Or. Seddon seconded the motion, and thought Mr Hill was acting rather as a dog in the manger.—The Chairman said this road would be the best for the Matahura settlers, but they must take into consideration the rest of the county. Mr Sandes' deviation as well as benefiting tho Matahura settlers would also benefit those in Moerangi.—Mr G. Hill was here introduced, and he said that he would oppose the road being taken as proposed in the petition as far as he was able, as it would run right through the part of his property he had laid out for homustead ground*, and through his racecourse. Mr Sandes' deviation would suit all parties better, although, perhaps, for some it would be a little longer.—The Engineer advised the Ceuncil to enquire carefully into the matter before taking any action, as if Mr Hill opposed the road being taken it would most likely lead to a lot of expense.—Or. Johnson's motion was then put and carried unanimously, and the Engineer was instructed to take the necessary steps to proceed with tho work. Ruts.—The Engineer was instructed to inspect the Rangiriri station road, and have the necessary repairs done. Drainage.— The Engineer reported that, with reference to Mr Friar's complaint of the water lying under his house, he had inspected the place, and found that to do the work properly would be an expensive job, as it would mean draining the whole street. He stated tho Council, as a Board of Health, would have to do something in the matter of drainage in Huntly, or next summer the hospital would be full of fever patients from there.—The Chairman said as a Board »f Health they could make the property-owners do a lot with regard to proper sanitary arrangements.—The Engineer stated that no road works had done any injury to Mr Friar, but that his house was built iu a hole, and the watar naturally lodged there.—The Clerk was instructed to reply to Mr Friar, that if he would subsidise the Counci'to the extent of 50% they might take action, and also to write to the Colonial Secretary to ascertain the position of the Council as a Local Board of Health. This was all the business.
