By way of comparison the Minister of Lands had prepared a return showing the number of sheep in sheep districts of the colony at the end of May, IStS and 18S9 ; also showing the increase durii g tho latter year. It is as follows: Mav 31st, IXBB : Auckland, 350,710; Napier, 3,008,721): Wellington and West Coast, 2,251,551 ; Marlborough and Nelson, 572,04(1; Canterbury and Kaikoiira, 4,773,178; lOtago, 3,827,-17!'. lotal, 15,042,108. May 31st, 185!): Auckland, 3S1.001; Napier, 3,104,084 ; Wellington and Wast Coast, 2,372,041; Marlborough and Nelson, 804,710; Canterbury and Kaikoura, 4,800,051; Otago, 3,834,035. lotal, 15,388,025. The increase is: Auckland, 31,195; Napior, 120,055; Wellington and West Coast, 120,090; Marlborough and Nelson, 32,1(i1; Canterbury and Kaikoura, 20,874 ; Otago, 7,450. Tho total increase is 34G.727, of which 280,230 is in the North Island and 00,407 in the South Island.
