THE ANTI-POVERTY SOCIETY.
TO THK EDITOR. Sir,—A public meeting in Cambridge in connection with the above Society, having been announced, will you kindly allow me to lay before your readers some of its objects and aims ? This Society was founded about two years ago in America by Henry George and Dr. McGlynn, and is virtually a crusade against involuntary poverty and the great social evils of the day. _ It _ seeks to bring about a more equal distribution of wealth by means of land nationalization, or, as it is more popularly styled, the singletax. We hold that the rent of the land is sufficient to take the place of all taxation, and that it is a folly as an injuctice to tax industry and improvements. The«subjer.t is being warmly taken up by the clergy and other leaders of the people, and it is to be hoped that the people of Cambridge will take advantage of the present opportunity of making themsolves acquainted with this great reform which is progressing with such rapid strides in all parts of the world. Those who feel the pinch of hard times should especially be present, and help us to bring about a better state of affairs.—Yours truly. H.R. Hyatt. '
