HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
FRIDAY. The House met at 2.30. Mr Mitchelson moved that the amendments made by the Legislative Council ill the Public Works Act Amendment Bill be agreed to, with the exception of the rejection of the clause giving the Railway Comsinners power to lease for terms not exceeding 21 years, and the insertion of a clause giving Harbour Boards power to spend money in the construction of streets. The Licensing Act Amendment Bill to validate licenses held by married women and give them power to transfer such licenses was read a second time. Mr Fergus moved the second reading of the Public Health Act Amendlriefit" Bill for the regulation of dairies and inspection of slaughter-house.*. Negatived on the voices. The Native Land Courts Acts Amendment Bill was in committee. Sir G. Grey urged the Government to withdraw the Bill. : ' ' •'' After a lengthy discussion Sir George Grey moved to report progress. Lost by 35 to 1(J. The debate was interrupted by the 5.30 adjournment. The House resumed 7.30. In Committee on the Nativo Land Court Acts Amendment Bill, Sir G. Grey again pressed the Picmier to make an explanation as to the transaction which the Bill waa intended to validate. Sir H. Atkinson again declined, and charged Sir G. Giey with obstructing the work of the Committee. After a lengthy discussion Mr Mitchelson agreed to consider whether the clause referring to removal of restriction should be recommitted. Several new clauses were added to the Bill. A message was received from the Governor, recommending the .House to amend the North Island -Main Trunk Loan, ISSIi, Application Act Amendment Bill, by which reference to, land in the Taranaki district was struck out. Mr Ballance pointed out the effect of this would be that a third of the proceeds of land sold on deferred payment would be lost to the district; that would be great injustice to Taranaki. After some discussion Sir G. Grey moved the adjournment of the debate until tomorrow. Agreed to. Sir H. Atkinson moved that the House at its rising adjourn till half-past ten tomorrow morning. He said there was no reason why all the business should not be finished to-morrow night. Mr Ballance said a number of importantBills were on the Order Paper. Sir H. Atkinson replied that if the House really wished to get through the business it could easily do so by to-morrow night. The motion was agreed to. Consideration of the Native Land Court 35i1l was then resumed, and the Bill was reported with amendments. Mr Mitchelson moved that the Bill be recommitted for the consideration of clause IS!).
