LATEST WELLINGTON NEWS.

|BY TELKGR.YPH. —I'RKSS ASSOCIATION'.] Wellington', Friday. C. Stephenson, who recently defeated Joseph Kemp on the Paramatta River, challenges Hearn for £200 aside, and the sculling championship of New Zealand, on any fair course agreed upon. The footballers arrived here to-day. Particulars of the Otago match, which resulted in a draw, show that the Auckland boy.s played a splendid game. Tim O'Connor: injured himself rather badly in attempting to score a try. The forwards all played well, dribbling and collaring, line play, scrums mid rushing around generally. Hobson, particularly, showed an improvement. Otago picked up too much, and but for the oir-side play of Stephenson and Keogli the Auckland backs would have got a much better show. .Tervis was the pick of the backs, closely followed by Rees, Brautid, Elliott and Warbrick. The last named kicked poorly, though he did fine work at times. Lynch, Davie and Keogh were the best Otago backs, though the latter was not a great wonder. Thomas did little work, but did it well. O'Conuer is rather bad, though recovering slowly, and will not play during the rest of the trip. Masofield's poisoned arm is getting all right. Lecky and McLean have just arrived. There is a splendid hearty feeling in Wellington over to-ninrrow's match, and the team expect fair impartial treatment, with a hard game. The footballers think the Wellington forwards will be too good, judging by the Canterbury match, but they have wholesonio dread of tho Auckland backs.

liis Excellency the Governor and his private secretary returned from Nelson today.
