TRACTION ENGINES.
TO THE HIHTOIt. SIR; —In Thursday's issue of your paper I notice that the Waipa County Council in their wisdom have resolvtd to pass a bylaw to regulate the traffic of traction engines. In your report of said meeting I read that Cr. liidler said " he thought they should have such a by-law as he knew of .several narrow escapes from accidents in his district lately. At present men are not sent ahead of the engine to give notice of its appioach.'' Now, sir, I would like to ask ilr Ridlor to mention 0110 single instance of the so-called narrow escapes that would have been in any way benefitted by having a man carrying a red Hag (10 yards in advance of the engine. Perhaps Mr liicller does not know that the noise and smoke of a traction engine are heard and seen long before a man carrying a red flag liO yards in advance could possibly be. In conclusion, lam not a believer in boycotting, but .1. will say that a man that would wilfully pile on more taxation or increased expenditure to an already over-burdened community, well, to say the least, I would not have much dealings with him.—l am, Ac.
Isaac Coatks. Hamilton, September 12th.
