AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

(l!Y ELKCTUtC TELEGRAPH. —COPYRIGHT.) Sydney, September 11. Thk farewell banquet to Admiral Fairfax last night was a brilliant success. In referring to the defences of the colonies, Admiral Fairfax snid those of Victoria were the most complete ; New Zealand had accomplished much, and what had been done was well done; New South Wales, he thought, was behind with defences, while Queensland had done little or nothing. He paid a high tribute of praise to the naval and military forces, and in wishing them farewell the Admiral expressed regret at his departure from Australia. In the House of Assembly last night the Bill to abolish flogging was rejected. A tender has been accepted for raising the steamer Centennial. Betting on the Hawkesbury meeting, which opens to-morrow, is more spirited. The inquest on the cook of the Centennial, who was drowned when the vessel sank, has lasted eight days, the result being a verdict of manslaughter against Capt. Leasing, who was committed for trial on October 2-Sth, but has been allowed out on bail. Arrived: 11.M.5. Calliope from New Hebrides. Melbourne, September 11. In the House of Assembly the tariff alterations are under consideration; the increased duty on barley and oats has been agreed to. Brisbane, September 11. The first shipment of Queensland coal was sent to New Zealand yesterday. It is expected that if the experiment is succesful colliers will afford a good opportunity of obtaining direct supplies of New Zealand
