Tlie Australian won the, O'Connor was first away, and rowing a fast stroke, soon had an advantage of half-a-leugth. On passing the Crabtreo Soarlc had drawn up level, and at the Soapworks was half-a-length lo the good. He continued to increase his lead, and it was at once apparent he had the race well in hand, Scarle sculling in an easy winner by 10 lengths. Time. 22min. 12sec.
Searlo met with an enthusiastic reception.
Thq Press is unaminous in conceding the superiority of Searle over his opponent.
The Australian contingent won ±,30,000 by their countryman's victory.
O'Connor admits Searle's superiority. The news of hi.s defeat was like a thunderclap at Toronto. The Canadians are said to have lost £80,000.
Sydney, September 10. The news of Searle's victory was received with great enthusiasm both hero and in Melbourne. Ten thousand pounds wore sent from New South Wales to back the champion.
