The totals from the whok country show 315 cases of violent crime against 525 in the corresponding period last year. Dacoities fell from 2:53 cases tc 130, and robberies from 19G to 111, and ol these latter there were twenty cases in which the property stolen did not amount in value to ten rupees. The number ol murders foil also from thirty to eleven. The Chief Commissioner says that few organised gangs of dacoits now exist, and tfi-it these include but few members. In reference to detection, Sir Chas. Crosthvvait remarks that there has been little improvement. He fears that the result of the confusion of lSß6and ISS7 when the province was tilled with armed bands ot laeoils, and when daeoities were sonunie--ous that the police were unable to devote special attention to each individual case —has not yet disappeared ; but, he says, he time has now come when ordinary loliee work should be resumed, and every ase carefully worked out and delected.
