Hamling, convicted of forgery, was bioaeht up this morning and sentenced to twelve months' surveillance under the First Offenders Probation Act. In this case prisoner had forged a bill for £35, but had paid it. The judge said the circumstances called for merciful consideration, the prisoner having an unblemished character and much domestic trouble. An action for slander, Horton v. Hawker, claimed by a merchant against a country storekeeper for £1000, is procecdiug. Both parties are well-known. NELSON, Friday. It is stated that Lord Onslow has leased the Cliff Property of Mrs Andrew Richmond up to the end of October, and will reside there with his family as soon as Lord Crauley can leave his present quarters. CHRTSTOHURCH Friday. Tho annual meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce took place today. The president, Mr A. Kaye, delivered a lengthy resume of the business of the year, dealing statistically with various phases of the commercial progress made during the year. The committee's report also referred te various items dealt with by the Chamber. Mr G. T. Martin, of the local branch of the National Mortgage Agency Company was unanimously elected president for the ensuing year.
