LOSS OF S S. CENTENNIAL.
[liY ELECTRIC telegraph. — COPYRIGHT.] Kyd.vky, August 20. The steamer Centennial muled for Wellington at nine o'clock la.»t night. The weather was tine, half-way down the harbour the steam collier, Kutiahooka, inward bound, struck the steamer st;m on. When the Ivanahooka got clear it was found that the water was pouring in through a big hole in the bow of the Centennial, and the vessel was headed tor the shore. Before reaching shallow water, however, the tires were put out, and the steamer sank m ten minutes. Immediately after the collision the boats were lowered, and the passengers taken off. The crew were, rescued by passing steamois. The cook, jumped into the sea. The Kanahuoka's propeller struck him on the leg, breaking the liirib. The poor fellow was rescued and taken to the hospital. The passengers and crow lost everything except what they stood in. The officers of the Centennial behaved splendidly. The vessel went down bow lirst, and only the mastheads are to be seen above water. There were 23 saloon and 31 steerage passengers, many of whom are rendered destitute by their losses. The chief cook, a fireman, and a steerage passenger are reported missing. The Centennial was iuvured for £0,500 in the Pacific Company ; the cargo was mostly uninsured.
