He thought the House could be prorogued in about a fortnight. Mr Ballance said an important amendment to the Property Assessment. Bill had been given notice of by which it was proposed to tix co onial bond-holders, and he thought the House should have an opportunity of expressing an opinion on the point. The Opposition viewed the proposal with appro'u itinn. Sir 11. A. Atkinson regarded the proposal as mischievous. SirG. Grev protestcq that great injustice was perpetrated on toe colony through foreign bond-holders being allowed to go free. Sir H. A. Atkinson moved the adjournment of the House to reply to Kir G. Grey. Me argued that the taxation of bond-holdars would virtually bo repudiation on the part of the colony. After fuither discussion, in which the proposal was denounced by Sir J. Hall, Mr Downie Stewart, and others, the amendment was negatived. On the inotlWa for going into committee on the Selectors Lands Re-valuation Bill, Mr Melven/.io (NVaihemo) moved that it be an instruction to the committee to insert a clause to removo doubts that have arisen whether land acquired by individuals under the Land Act before 1887 should be taken into account iu calculating the amount oE land allowed to bo taken up under the Land Act, ISB7. After some discussion, the Government agreed to the motion, which was then carried, and the House went into Committee on the Bill. Clause 2 : Mr Valentiue moved that the Bill should apply to the tenants of Otago School Commissioners. After some discussion the amendment was lost by 4G to 12. Clause 5 : Decision of Board to be approved by Ministers. Mr Scobio McKeuzie moved that this clause be struck out. Lost on the voices. The clause was ret lined, and progrees was reported on the Bill. Sir H. A. Atkinson moved the second reading of the Savings Bank Act, 1858, Amendment Bill, to make mortgages valid under the Land Transfer Act. Agreed to. The Wi l'ere Land Grant Bill was committed, read a third time and passed. On the motion for going into Committee of Supply, Mr Verrali moved as an amendment that it is desirable that a State Bank be established in the colony. After some discussion the debate was adjourned till to-morrow, and the House rose at 11 p.m.
