WILD DOGS OF ASSAM.

When dogs run wild, as in Australia and India, they show many of tho e.harticteristius of wolves (says the Youth's Companiou). They have a similar habit of hunting in packs. The people of Assam tell wonderful stones of the cunning and sagacity of thoso wild hounds when in pursuit of game. They say that when a pack goes on to hunt an old dog goes in front and searches for fresh scent of a deer, Having found this, he (.tarts oft' alone, and when he has ascertained tho whereabout of the quarry, returns to tbo pack, which he theu disposes iu a circle of a milo in diameter around it. Each member of the pack has a part alioted to him. These precautions having boen taken the old general starts along once more in search of tho victim, and on finding gives chase. Tho startled deer of course flies from his enomy, who follows, giving tongue as a signal to the rest of the pack. The deer, far outstripping the dog, rushes on, but is suddenly met iu front by oue of the outlying dogs, who gives chase. The deer, of course, turning to the right or left, asaiii rushes off, only te bo mot and turned by another dog. Thus, turned at every point,, the poor animal becomes more and more exhausted, while the pack gradually closes in up on it, leaving no avenue of escape, and dozens of sharp fangs soon feast ou tho victim which has iu this way been run to death.
