BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAM. —COPYRIGHT.) Sydney, August 23. The question of garrisoning the Australian coaling depots with Imperial troops is attracting general attention. The l)aily Telegraph says, "The colonies are iuvited to concur in garrisoning Thursday Island, and King George's Sound with Imperial troops at colonial expense. This is the second proposal of military vassalage which has emanated from the present colonial conference, the lirst being the Natal tribute scheme." The Telegraph urges the depQt should be manned by Australians. The Queensland Government insist on this being done, but Mr Gillies, Premier of Victoria, is in favour of employing Imperial troops. At a meeting of the Sanioan Committee discredit was cast on the telegrams from Auckland stating there was no fear of famine, but it was di.cided to await definite information before taking action.
