TE AROHA

Warden's Court.—The fortnightly sitting of this Court took place before Mr Warden Northcroft when, application on behalf of the owners for protection to the Runkuka and Miranda, licensed holdings, by Mr U. llobson, was granted. The Mining Inspector applied for the cancellation of tho Alameda claim license on the ground that the sufficient number of men required by the Act were not employed. Forfeited, with 4s costs. R. M. Court.—The only case which was brought before Mr Nurthcroft at the sitting of this Court on Tuesday was that of John 13iian against Mick Cronin, two respectable Waiofongo'nai residents, who, like their nation, had a ciievancc. Although not armed with schticks, each had a limb of the law to champion his cause. The present action was about tho possession of an oven, and no doubt, as the R.M. remarked, was brought on through bad blood engendered by the decision given at last Court day, when the position of parties was reversed, the, plaintiff, in the present I .-.ction, coming out victorious in the case. Cronin v. Brian : The particulars of this case are briefly these :—Brian swore he lent Cronin an oven about twelve month? ago, which he demanded the return of within a certain -18 hours , . The oven was in a house rented by defendant which he had left recently, taking the oven with him. Cronin stated the oven was presented to him as a wedding gift by the plaintiff, and though he considered it as his own property, he had returned it, leaving it at the baek door of the houso he formerly occupied rather than have any bother about it. After listening to arguments by the solicitors, his Worship remarked on the bad blood which existed j between tho parties, and told them they were simply spending their money on law, and non-suited plaintiff in 13s u'd costs. This was all the business. New Buildinos.— Several new shops and other buildings are about to be erected in tho township. Messrs Comes and Co., butchers, finding their business broadening, have very wisely taken the precaution to have erected larger premises than they formerly occupied, and from which they were, according to a recent judgment, ejected. Mr Johnson is having a tinsmith's shop erected in the main street, whilst large additions to the business promises lately in the occupation of T. and S. Morrin and Co. (Limited) are about to be made. Mr G. Gallagher is also having built the largest stabling accommodation in the district. What between new work and general repairs, caused through tho recent destructive storm, together with making tho town into a borough, fresh hope should bo infused amongst the inhabitants. In this connection, where there is a general wish to push the town ahead in spite of Nature's storm, there is a cry of discontent as to the tenure of a large portion of township allotments, and a public meeting is shortly to bo called, to try to enforce on tho Government a fair settlement of European rights against Maori and pakeha relations who at tho present time are luxuriating in tho receipt of rents collected by Government, a larger revenue than they over had, whilst miners and tradesmen who have made the place and stuck by it are struggling for a crust. It is an accepted fact, were To Aroha and Waiorongomai townships proclaimed freehold there would bo five times tho population there is in the district within the next two years.
