By the arrival of the Island steamer Richmond, news eoines to band that at Nukualofa, Tonga (Friendly grsup), on Saturday, 3rd inst., several severe shocks of earthquake were felt at about half-past live in the afternoon. Tim earth tremor lasted about twenty seconds, accompanied by a great noi.se and rumbling. A terrific yelling was kept up for some minutes by ihe natives of the locality, until they were assured that the shock was over. The Tnngans seemed to cling to their old belief, similar to the ancient Ma-ii idi-n, that earthquakes are causvd by somo subterranean demi-god turning over in his slumbers. The Europeans and natives at Tonga are agreed that the shock uas the most severe they have yet experienced. Next day (Sunday) there were two slight tremors.
