ARREST OF DEAN, THE THAMES DEFAULTER.

By the s.s. Hauroto, from Sydney, Detective Herbert arrived with the absconder, F. C. Dean in his charge. The arrest was made at Norfolk Island, Dean having escaped in the schooner Christine, which he boarded on the night he disappeared from the Thames. Detective Herbert, armed with a warrant, followed the fugitive in the mission schooner, Southern Cross, which arrived at Norfolk Island the day after tho Christine. With great tact and promptitude, he proceeded on board and made the capture. He then left for Noumea with his prisoner, and there caught the Fiji mail steamer for Sydney. Dean was brought up before the Bench, at Auckland, and remanded to the Thames. He v/as passing himself off as a Catholic priest, under the name of Father Davies. Detective Herbert is entitled to substantial recognition, for the manner in which he has successfully performed his difficult task. (by telegraph.—press association). Thames, Friday. An immense crowd assembled on tho wharf to meet the Rotomahana with Dean, who on landing was received with cheers and groans. Sergeant Gillies had a cab waiting into which Dean was put after some difficulty and driyen straight off to Shortland gaol. A large crowd followed the cab up the wharf hooting and yelling, but dispersed upon learning that Dean was to be taken to Shortlarid gaol instead of Graliamstown. \
