RAGLAN

Steam kiis. —On Tuesday, the 6th inat., the two steamers Glenelg and Rowena belonging t:> the Northern Company, came into this port, the former having on board timber from Kaipara for the completion of the new wharf. She proceeded at once to the end of the wharf, and discharged her cargo. The Rowena having discharged her cargo took on board a large quantity of flax and other produce. The Glenelg proceeded to Wanganni after leaving this port. Wharf.—Now that the contractor has received the timber necessary for the completion of the structure he is pushing on the work, and in a few weeks wo hope to see it finished. Flax. —The steam engine bought some time ago for Messrs Wilson was safely conveyed in their punt to its destination, and the mill and buildings are being erected and will soon be in active operation. Messrs Galvan have, we hear, secured several thousand acres of (lax land for their mill. A request has been received from an Auckland merchant by some of our most successful flax manufacturers, asking them to forward simples of the fibre for the coming exhibition at Dunedin. Already nine mills are running in the district, and feimi two more are to lie started. At one of tho mills, Messrs, Wallis' of Olcete, the other day, five tons of green flix were put through the stripper. Around some of the flax mills a large quantity of the fibre is now spread, " white for the flax harvest." At Kawhia the mill of Messrs Langley and Co. is now at work with a powerful engine and two stripper 3. They are putting through a large quantity of flax every day. Settlement. —No doubt can exist but that the increased activity of our flax industry must, in a great measure, promote settlement upon the land, as goldtields and gutu lands have done, to some extent. Around Kawhia, with its splendid harbour and great extent of land unoccupied, also land in Raglan is available for settlement. Any means that will promote the settlement of the wnste lands around must be of great good. The population that is being brought into the district by the work of the flax mills should help to solve this question, [n one of the ridings of the county (Onewvero) there has been a rapid influx of new settlers, and from less than ten ratepayers there are now nearly one hundred on the roll. The Wkathkh. —On Saturday and Sunday last wo had a severe easterly gale blowing here, which has now subsided. Not much rain having fallen in some parts, but in others heavy showers came down. R.\(>LAN Road Board.—At a meeting of this Board, held in the Council Chambers on Saturday afternoon la<t, the Chairman (Mr A. Gilmour) was instructed, at the request of tho Chairman of the County Council, to be present at tho next meeting of the Council with the books, the Raglan Road Board being about to merge into tho County Council at an early date. Insurance. —Messrs Rcndall and Henry have been appointed agent for the Government Insurance Dspaitment in this district.
