THE PAYNE FAMILY.
Tins clever family gave one of their entortaining performances to a full house in tho Volunteer Mall, Hamilton West last night, people from all parts of the district being present. Considerable interest was taken in the performers from their being purely colonial, and notwithstanding that two of the yoHtig'ladies, Misses Nellie and Maud, were sulfeiing from severe colds and Mr Payne Senr was not in his usual form, the programme was gone through in a manner that thoroughly satisfied the audience. The chief attraction was tho violin solos and instrumental parts by the company, which were remarkably good. Miss Maud's "Blue Bells of Scotland " on the violin was a finished performance. As much may be said of the violin solo, "The Last Rose of Summer," with variations, by Miss Liz/.io Payne. The part singing in " Steal Away to Jesus," after the Fisk Jubilee Singers, was very good. Miss Nellie's "No Sir," was rendered with charming coqoettry that brought her loud applauso and demands for an encore. " Three Littlo Maids From School," from the Mikado, was capitally given by the three young ladies. Mr Steele's baritone in " Queen of the Earth " and Mr W. J. Payne's in "I'll Take You Home, Kathleen," were dofervedly applauded. Various popular airs by tho company on the violins, and the humourous songs, were well executed and well received. The most laughable piece of the evening was the cat duet by Messrs Steele and Payne, an imitation of two rival torn cats, and tho voices and antics were so true to life that they would have deceived any feline auditors that might havo heard thorn. The audience was convulsed. The performance on the whole was well worth guing to see, and we hava no doubt there will be a crowded house at Cambridge to-night to hoar this talented family.
