TE AWAMUTU.

The Payne Family.—This family is billed to appear in the various towns in Waikato, save To Awamutu. This was tho caso with theFisk Jubilee Singers. The advance agent on making enquiries in Hamilton, was told that Te Awamutu was a little hamlet with a blacksmith's shop, one hotel and a tumble-down hall; being a stranger the agent naturally believed the story. Two years afterwards when about visiting Waikato again, their agent—a now manwas told the same thing with the result that people here were much disappointed. Now, as ft matter of fact a good company of any kind get a bigger house whsn they come to Te Awamutu than in iiny other place outside of Auckland, Hamilton and Cambridge not except*!. It would not be a compliment to the Payne Family or the Fisk Jubilee .Singers to place them in comparison with a circus company, but it will serve to illustrate. When Cole came here the fir.-t time ho was agreeably surprised at the result, for he admitted having taken £7~>, which was more than he took anywhere outside of Auckland. I counted £120 in the house at one of Woodyear's performances. Now, if a circus company get such houses it is only reasonable to suppose that such a performance as tho Payne Family give would attract a largo house. The place is favourably situated, being the centre of a populous district and the people are fond of music, as witness the attendances at concerts whero popular singers apP'jnr, and if tho Paynes conic here thyy will get a crowded limiso. and an appreciative audience. Surely, if it pays t> appear at Ngaruawahia it will pay much bettor to ■appear at Te Awamutu where t.hen; is a much larger and more populous district. I hope t'w manager will see this and give the in ilt')• consideration ;w" can promise him a full liou.se, and also assure him that tin: hall is nut a tmnblo-dnwn p)ac<\ and that it is as us any in Waikato. Hamilton and Cambridge liavo not a monopoly of music-loving people as they try to make strangers boliave.
