THE LARGEST ELEPHANT EVER KILLED IN INDIA.
The Madras Mail reports that some time last year a solitary male elej-hant, which hud killed two men ami was a source of terror to the neighbourhood, was pursued and killer] in a tulnok of the South Arcot district. On hearing of this iin olb'eial of the Central Museum of Madras repaired to tlio piano to secure the .skeleton, but did not roach it until after the feody had been buried. Orders were then given to exhume the bones and send them to Madras. This was done, and the skeleton, on being mounted, was found to be 10ft. (iin. liigh. Tim |irinr:i[>.il .-mtliority on the subject, MriSaundorc-ou, iu "Thirteen Years Among the Wild Boasts of India," says that out of hundreds of elephants measured in the fieah lie never found one to exceed 9ft. 10in., or Sin. less than the Madras skeleton. The tusks are Gft. along the curve, and weigh 501b. each.
