It will be seen by our Parliamentary telegrams that, through the determined stand taken by the Government on the question of retaining the Act of 1887, reducing the number of members, Sir George Grey has withdrawn his amendments, to which we referred in our last issue. It will also be observed from our Wellington correspondent's political notes that the two great conflicting paities have compromised the points at issue. The quota agreed to in favour of the country districts is to be 28 added to their population, and not deducted from the towns, as in the Bill before the House. Care is to be taken that the margin allowed in the Commissioner's computation for each district is not used against the towns. The Bill is to be altered to meet the terms of the compromise, and for that purpose the House has adjourned till Monday. This brings the stonewall to an end.
