Further eorrespondenee has taken place belweou -Mr JiOlice and Minister of Justice re Louis Chemi-•- In one of his letters Mr .Tellicon states " You say that every proper facility will be afforded the prisoner to place before the Government any statements of facts tint he uiiy consider materiiil to the con.uderation ot his cise. For nearly a week you have successfully prevented bim from doing this ; every moment's delay is prejudicial to his interests, :<nd you, as Minister of Justice aro responsible for it. i. am, therefore, compelled to say that I will not allow these interests to be trilled with further, and miless I receive on Mond.iy absolute authority to interview the prisoner I shall deem it my duty to report all the circumstances to His Excellency the Governor in order that the aid of the Imperial Government may be obtained by cable." Referring to the petition in favour of the prisoner, the Press states, the signatures received represent members of both Houses of I'iirli.iment, medical men, Justices of the Peace, merchants, &c, while among them are also those of most of the Grand Jury and one of the common jury which sat on the trial. Two other members of tliu cnivictins jury signed the petition, and that still more will add their names before tho lists are. called in. In connection with this it is rumoured that one ot the common jurymen, signing the petition in iv well known shop, after the signature was attached, tho shop, keeper asked the owner of the name how he could sign the petition in the. lace of tho verdict he had returned, whereupon the juryman replied that had the jury had any idea that public feeling was running so strong in favour of the prisoner, they would never have returned such a verdict, in other words would have reversed it."
