Present: Messrs E. Gallagher, (chairman), Ehert, Lipsey, Mills and Heathcote. The minutes of tho last meeting were read and confirmed. Before commencing with tho ordinary business, the clerk (Mr C. Ahier), wished to state that the available balance at the Boards credit with the Bank of New Zealand is £118 4s 7d, and that during the month their re ceipts had been £172, being £102 for hotel licenses, and £10 for an auctioneer's license. The statement waa received with satisfaction. The following accounts, on the motion ot Com. Mills, seconded by Coin. Lipsey we.re passed for payment:—Postoffice, 10s; .7. Lipsev), thought it was the usual thing for people to call at tho ofli '(■ for their money.—Com. Lipsey : How arc people ti know when their accounts are passed for payment?— The Chairman : They can easily ask any of the commissioners or tho clerk, besides, they are published in the newspapers. The only press representative present being VOUU OWN, Com. Lipsny remarked the fact, and contended the Board should have nn office, and pay a clerk to do the work.—The Chairman pointed out that they have an office (Mr Ahier's), mid thought'ifc would be foolish to pay a clerk when they can get one for nothing. A letter was read from tho chairnmt! of the T.wranga County Council, asking for a subsidy and co-operation in getting Thompson's track formed into u cmch road. —The Chairman thought this w,is a county affair, and Com. Mills said the matter was brought beforn the hist meeting 'if the Pi iko County Council, when it was stated they wre not in a position to grant a subsidy, but they had promised to assist in getting money from the Government ; he moved that a reply be .sent that the Board is not in a position to givo any subsidy, but will urge on tho member (MiKelly) to do all he can to get the road made. With reference to contracts for breaking metal for the road between Te Aroha and Stoney Creek, the Chairman state! he had let one portion, 00 yards block at os (i.l per yard, and a motion that the Chairman's action be endorsed by the Board was carried. It was also resolved to call for tenders for the remaining 100 yards.—Com. Henthcote moved that a surfaceman bo put on tho road to spread tho metal, clean up hole-, &c, as long as necessary, and that the road from Biidee-streefc to thn northern boundary be likewise metalled (Com. Lipsey giving the gravel free of charge).—Com. Mills seconded, and it was agreed that the works bo supervised by the Works Committee.—Con?. Mills moved that the Clerk bo instructed to write to Mr Kelly, M.H.K., that the Town Board are de.iirous to form Tβ Aroha and Waiorongomui into a borough, and at tho same time forward the numerously-signed petition from both places to this effect—Com. Ebert seconded, and tho motion was carried unanimously. As the meeting was about concluded, Mr Robert Mackie entered the room, and in reply to a question remarked he had nothing to say, but he expected to have had a lawyer with him to contest the legality of the Board's puwer to refuse to grant him a slaughter-house license.—Com. Lipsey retorted. "It's no good, Mr Mackie, were you to bring fifty lawyers, we're notgoincr to have a slaughteryard in the middle of the town."
Larcenies.—At last our local police have in a small measure redeemed their character, for official utility, in the capture of two young depredators named Bond and Rich, who were respectively sentenced on Friday to two months and 14 days' imprisonment for the theft of wearing apparel from a swag belonging to a bushman residing at Thomson's Family Hotel. Bond, although apparently a lad of only 17 years, has been in trouble before, hence the heavier punishment. It may lie stated that neither of the boys belong to the Te Arolia district. Another theft from the same hotel took place betweon Saturday and Sunday morning from a meat-safe attached to the outside of the building. On this latest occasion about 20lbs of meat, a quantity of sausages and other edibles for Sunday consumption, were amissing. This place has now .gained quite a notoriety for undetected robberies, as this meat theft, makes the eighth in 20 months, all of which remain vet in mystery. The annoyance and dngnst in losing articles of vhlur such as watches and clucks, has not endod there, for in the case of the robbery from the shop of Mr I Sergei , , our respected watchmaker, T am informed that sino; th»n Ins trade has fallen off very considerably anil his character mutely shaken without the least foundation. Mr V.erger may well exclaim Wlui steals my jiiirsr, sli-.ils (rash. He. Hut hi! that lilcluv-i from m>: my irooil name, Rol>s mn of that whirl) not imrklms him, And maki-s mo poor indeed. Tim gfiiifii'al fueling is that our country poiice as a rule become too moss grown, can neither see nor be seen when required. KiNKixo. — This amusement is all the inge hero just now. as the Moor of the Public Hall w.v occupied by ladies and gentlemen on wheels during two evenings last week.
