CONCERT AT CAMBRIDGE.
Tin; complimentary concert to Mr and Mrs Owen Garland, given in the 1 üblic Hall, Cambridge, on Thursday evening was a most pronounced success. Ihe hall nuite full, among the audience being a number who had journeyed from neighbouring tnwn<hiin, not a few of whom were from Hamilton. Mr and Mrs Garland have at all times been most willing to assist at eoncerts and entertainments of various descriptions, and it was felt by many of ho inhabitants of the town, and also by t ie members of the .English Church, that the present would be an opportune time to riako them some slight recompense. MiGarland has conducted the church choir gratuitously for some time, and it was only natural that the church members should be the prime iiiovcts in getting up the eiuei* taimnent. Dr. Monn appears to have been £i.neral manager, with Mrs Dickenson and Miss Wilson as assistants, ana very able ones they proved, the latter lady writing several of the songs and conducting the minstrel practices. The programme. commenced with a Gipsy scene, with a and two solus from the Bohemian Girl,, by Mis C. Hunter aud Mr H. Wilson. In is was very effective, the dresses being pretty j and the singing good. Song, " The Broken Pitcher," Mrs Maxmll ; song, Sccnes that are Bnghtest, Mrs H. Jackson ~ on, " Anchored," Mr Rigg. We have luaul »11 three of these performers to much bottu effect. Character song, - rl "' e ? r Crows," Mosdames Dickenson, Maxwell, and Miss W. Walker. The get up, aud also the action of the crows, was immense, and they had to repeat the performance Trio, "Where Art Ihou Leloyed, Mrs and Miss Chambers and Mr Garland, this narrowly escaped an encore, bong, "The Silver Cup," by Mr Burgess of ie Awamutu. This gentleman was in good voice and was encored vociferously. He substituted "Will of the Whwp, and was again loudly applauded. Song, Alio Skipper's Flag," Mr Rigg. This gen eman was evidently suHermg from a cold, and was not heard to advantage. Iht first pait of the programme was concluded by the character song, " Daruy and Joan, Mr and Mrs O. Garland respectively, representing t'.ie aged couple. Mrs Gailand sang the song beautifully and it was redemanded. The second part was devoted entirely to the LiUywlnte Minstrels, who acquitted themselves splendidly. ihe choruses were really fine and reflect credit upon Miss Wilson, who had trained the singers. Messrs C.ileman and Horace Stewart wore Tainbo and Bonea respective.! Yi and came out with local joke?. -Lne hall was then cleared tuid dancing commenced and was kept up till 1 a.m. A number of ladies provided refreshments and everything passed off most pleasantly. We trust there will be a substantial amount to hand ovor to Mr and Mrs Gar.and.
