CREAMERY AT WHATAWHATA
A TiAllGhi.y-attknl)KD meeting of Whatawhata settlers was held in the school-house at 7 p.m, on Monday, the 15th. Mr Dawson occupied the chair, and called upon Mr K. C. Shepherd, as one of the committee appointed at the previous meeting, to give his report of their labours. Mr Shepherd read tho resolution of the former meeting, which appointed Messrs Rothwell, Dawson, Fergusson and himself a committee to ascertain what support the milk suppliers would give the new seheme ; how the site and necessary capital could be obtained, and what prices and terms Messrs Reynold's and Co. would give for the milk. Mr Shepherd stated that the new scheme was for the milk suppliers to take ail equal number of shares in the creamery to the cows they had promised, and would submit to a reduction in their milk payments, at the rate of 2d per cow par month, or any lesser smn that the trustees might fix upon, until thecrreamery was paid for. As the result of this canvas, the list, which was headed with the above conditions, showed that nineteen settlers had agreed to take 244 shares, and supply the milk of 220 cows, and there were some others whom they had not seen, but who they were sure of, which would bring the list of cows to 250. The land for a creamery site was offered to them by Mr John Furgeson, upon a long lease, at a rental of 10s Od per annum. The necessary capital could be obtained, provided that the trustees had some plan by which the whole liability would be gradually paid off in one or two years. Tho price and torras olfered by Messrs Reynolds and Co. were stated in the firm's circular, which was laid on the table. After some discussion tho following resolutions were unanimously carried :—(1) "That the committee communicate with Messrs Reynolds and Co., informing them that the milk-suppliers of Whatawhata are prepared to erect the creamery, and requesting them to forward a plan of the building required, and the nature and probable cost—if obtained through them— of the engine, separator, otc. " ; (2) "That Messrs T. Rothwell. A. Dawson, A. Calder, E. C. Shepherd, "W. McLeish, senr., G. Swanson and C. Limnier bo constituted a Board of Trustees, with power to add to their number, anil with power to obtain a lease of the land for a creamery site, to obtain tho necessary capital, to erect the creamery, and to make such rules and regulations as may be considered necessary in the interests of the milk-suppliers and shareholders." At tho conclusion of the public meeting, tho trustees met, and appointed Mr Dawson chairman and Mr Shepherd secretary. The secretary was directed to communicate with Messrs Reynolds and Co. at once.
[t will be seen from the foregoing that although the creamery is not yet an accomplished fact, it fairly promises to become so, and once established thero will be no fear as t > its future, for no township is so centrally situated, being upon the bank of the Waipa River and at the junction of the four main roads. The creamery will be erected at the bridge ivhich crosses the river.
