LECTURE ON "CHARACTER."

Wkdnksday evening last was anything but a night (in which ordinary people would can; to leave homes fur the p.irpose of hoaring a. lectuve. k'og anil rain together are not a pleasant combination. Nevertheless iivray fair audience assembled in the Hall at Paterangi on that evening to hear the lecture on " Character " by the Ji/jv. 0. IT. Garland of Cambridge. The duties of chairman were ably fulfilled by Mr Macky, who after devotional exercises, briefly introduced the lecturer to the meeting. Mr Garland is a pleasant speaker to listen t>>, with a manner cheerful and eisy and a clear and forcible delivery, lie at mich. made himself thoroughly at homo with his audience, and for the space of overall hour, with but one interval for music, hold Ms hearers in rapt attention and in oager and delighted interest. The lecture throughout was i most able one, abounding in healthful, invigorating instruction enforced by apt illustration, graphic narrative, and olnquent appeal. Frequent spontaneous applause marked the appreciation of tho audience, and at the close tho vote of thanks to the lecturer was carried by hearty and long continued acclamation. During the interval a duet was contrihuted by the Misses Uermnnn and Macky, and a song by Miss Germann (with organ and violin accompaniment). A collection on beh-ilf of the Wesloyaii circuit fund having been made, vut'is of thanks to tho chairman and musicians were heartily carried and the meeting was closed with the benediction. Should the Kev. lecturer be persuaded to re-deliver his lecture in the Waikato, we strongly advice all who can to go and hear him, and we are sure they will not repent, it. Mr Garland lectured in Tβ Awarimtu one evening and created a most favourable impression, and if, as it is reported he is likely to deliver another there, we would recommend the Wo'luyans to secure the Hall, for the church will not hold all who will go to hear him.
