Water Suiti.v.—The following opinion was received from Messrs Stewart and Hunter re water supply Auckland, 29th June, ISK9. To tho Secretary Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Sir, — Wo are in rcceiut of your letter of 27th inst. re I [ospital water supply, asking our opinion as to the best means of raising the water under tho conditions you mention. In reply, we beg to state that we shall be very glad"to give you all the advice necessary to enable yon to make the best of the circumsti.oces'. You have, however, omitted the principal factor in the conditions, viz., the amount of water you require daily. It is possible that the necessary quantity is boyond the power of one man to raise it to the required height, and no sort of gearing nor any class of pump can increase tho power applied. All these can do is to increase the forco at the sacrifice of time. Taking your data of 80ft. from the bottom of the well to the tanks, and allowing 15ft. for depth of water, this leaves Tift, required lift. Tho quantity of water which one man can raise to this height is two hundred and twenty (220) gallons per hour ; that is, doing an verago man's work. It seems to us that this quantity, equal to 1,7(50 gallons per day, may ho ample for your requirements, and that loss would do, but it is tho most expensive pumping power you could have, unless, indeed, the quantity required is so small that two or throe hours work would suffice. If this is so, then all you want is an arrangement of pump and gearing, by which a man's power can be applied to the best advantage. It would bo much the best way for us to see the whole circumstances on tho ground. We could then determine tho best menus of arranging and fixing everything. For such a visit, and considering the circumstances, we would charge yon £2 2s and expenses. Further charges would depend on what was fnuhd necessary to be done.—We have tho honour to be, Sir, your most obedient servants, Stewart and Hinteh.
