LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. (BY TULKOHAPH.— I'KESS ASSOCIATION'.) WEDNESDAY. The Council met at 2.30. Several Bills wore introduced and read a first timu. The second reading of tho Medical Practitioners Bill was moved by Hon. Mr Stevens, and the debate was ultimately adjourned till Tuesday next. The Council rose at 3.40 till Thursday. HOUSE or REPRESENTATIVES. WEDNESDAY. The House mot at i3.3o_p.in. The l.'romier gave notice to move for the appointment of a committee to inquire into the Harbour Hoards of the colony. Iv.'plying to questions Ministers said they did not intend to introduce any amendment to tho Gaining and Lotteries Act in the direction of limiting or abolishing the totalisator ; they did not. feel justified in making any change in the the present system under which coroners juries served without, remuneration ; they intended to move for :> Select Committee to enquire fully into matters connected with the position of Erieudly Societies. The Minister of Defence produce:.! the report of Major-General Stewart referred lo by Mr Hutchinson l«st night and moved that it he read.
A lengthy discussion ensued as to tlio wisdom of making thu report public, but ultimately it was read by the cleric. The following Bills were introduced and rand a first timeMr Eish: A Bill to amend the Licensing Act, 1881. Mr I lodgkinson: The Kivorton Corporation Empowering Bill. Mr Seddon: Ihe Mines Act, ISBG, Amendment liill, and the Gold Duties Abolition Bill. Sir G. Grey: A Bill to prohibit the introduction of labourers other than Europeans into New Zealand. Mr Hutchinson : The Waverley County Bill. Mr Reeves : A Bill to repeal the Gamine? and LoUories Act, 1871, and amendments thereto. Sir G. Grey : A Bill to provide for the limitation of votes at any election of members for the House of Kepresentatives. Hon. Mr Hislop : The Destitute Persons Bill. The discussion on opposed motions occupied the House till the 5.30 adjournment, The House resumed at 7.30 p.m. Sir G. Grey moved "That in the opinion of this House it is not desirable that houso allowance should be paid to any Minister who does not reside at the seat of Government." Sir H. Atkinson said the allowance was made to Ministers in lieu of a house, as a personal allowance. . Mr Ballance said there had been Ministerial residences in Wellington at the disposal of the Attorney-General had ho chosen to reside in Wellington. Sir G. Grey having replied, the motion was agreed to on the voices. Mr Samuel moved the second reading of the Divorce Extension Amendment Bill, briefly explaining- its provisions. Messrs Steward, Hodgkinson and Izard supported the Bill, and Mr Blake opposed it.
The second reading was agreed to on the U Sii' h 'H. Atkinson laid on the table the correspondence between Mr Fisher and himself. In reply to a question the Premier said he objected to the papers being printed without being referred to the printing committee, as there were charges against public ollicnrs who "could not defend themselves. Mr Wisher" said it would be most unfair to him if the correspondence was not published. ~,1.1 i j Sir 11. Atkinson denied that he had initiated the correspondence, he regretted nothing ho had written, but regretted the cause, which was a disgrace to the colony. Mr .Wisher moved that the papers be referred to the printing committee. Carried by 3!) to 20. The House then went into committee of Supply and further consideration of the Estimated. . . , Class 13. A lengthy discussion ensued on the Volunteer Vote and progress was reported and the House rose at 10.35 pan,
