LECTURE IN CAMBRIDGE WEST.
Ox Tuesday evening Mr Hyatt gave a lecture on "Sulphur," in the Cambridge West School, which was very well attended considering what a wet night it was. He commenced his lecture by referring to the regions in which pure sulphur is found, namely,—The Hot Lakes, and a wild, desolate, and weird looking place near Rotorna called "Sodom and Gomorrah." Mr Hyatt explained a great many things about sulphur which were illustrated by experiments, very interesting and instructive, lie then went on to talk of sulphuric acid. The lecturer referred to Manchester where they use 3000 tons of sulphuric acid, and 2(i00 tons of salt per week in making many useful things, such as soap and soda. There was a very nice collection of specimens of .sulphur in compound and simple forms, some of which were sulphide of iron, sulphide of lead, sulphide of mercury, and irmndic. Many experiments were shown which were very pretty, especially the magnesium wire which was burnt to show the'real colour of the sulphur, and gave a very brilliant light. The lecture closed shortly after nine o'clock with a vote of thanks, which was heartily carried by all present.—(By a school girl.)
