CAMBRIDGE ROAD BOARD
The newly-elected Board met at the Criterion Hotel, Cambridge, on Saturday at 2.30 p.m. The Election.—The Returning Officer, (Japt. McPherson, reported that Messrs ■I. Taylor, J. Forrest, E. Pickering, H. J. Kallcudar and H. I. Paton were the only individuals nominated, and fhey were therefore elected. Chairman and Officers —Mr James Taylor was unanimously re-elected chairman, and Capt. McPherson, clerk, treasurer, &e., and Mr H. Fitzgerald, collector. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Condolence.—Mr Forrest referred to the decease of Mr J. J. Smith who had been a member of the Board for a great number of years, and moved that a letter of condolence be sent to his relatives.— Carried unanimously. The New Rate.—The Clerk reported a credit balance of £253 33 4d. —The Chairmau thought they would be able to run another year at a low rate. —Mr Forrest pointed out that in the future they would have to provide about £70 per year for Hospital purposes, hitherto the county had paid it, but another year the Road Board would have to find it.— The Chairman thought it time to meet trouble when it came.—lt was then resolved to give notice to strike a rate at the next meeting of £d in the £. Main Road Maintenance. —Mr Forrest deprecated the employing of a man permanently to keep the main road in repair. He said many parts of it wanted gravelling, and this £50 a year paid to the surfaceman would gravel the whole of it in two years. He stated that the man had only been working on the Cambridge end of the road twice in the twelve months, He thought is would be best not to renew the contract. —Messrs Pickering aud Paton said a good deal of work had been done at their end of the road.—Mr Kallender thought the holes should be filled in, aud he moved that a surfaceman be employed when required until the dry weather set in, and then the road be gravelled. This suggestion was adopted, and Mr Forrest was deputed to take charge of the road from Cambridge to the Hautapu Post-office, and Mr Pickering from there to the Tamahere bridge. Licensing Committees.—The Chairman was authorised to sign a petition from the Hutt County Council, similar to the one mentioned in the report of the Taotaoroa Road Board.
Absentees' Lan d. —The Public Trustee wrote asking the value of Montgomery's estate.—The Clerk had furnished the required information.
Fkncourt Bridge.—Mr Forrest was deputed to see that the bridge was repaired.
Victoria Road.— Mr Ivalleudar undertook to inspect a bridge and drain on the above road, and if they were useless to have them filled in.
No. 1 Station Road.—Messrs Forrest and Pickering were authorised to have the necessary repairs done to this road. The water is to be let off at the sides. Mr Forrest also undertook to see to a gravel-pit on this road being filled in.
The Tamaiikre Road. — The Clerk was instructed to urge upon the Tama*
here Road Board the necessity of at one# repairing the Victoria Road just heyond the Cambridge boundary.—The Chairman Maid there were holes in it 18 inches deep, which were very dangerous.
Tiik Katkpavuhs—Mr Forrest deplored the apathy of the ratepayers in not attending the annual meeting. Only three were present.—The Chairman said it looked as if the ratepayers were satisfied with the way the money was spent. Accounts. — The following ace uints wore passed for payment:—Sir Wm. Wastneys, f 1 7s ; T. I'ennell, £8 6s 8d ; J. S. Bond, 12s 6d ; Cleik, £5. This was all the business.
