HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The usual monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Hamilton, at 7.15 p.m. on Tuesday evening. There were present: Crs. Salmon, Tippen, Wood, 8011, Lees, von Stunner and Jones. —Cr. Bell moved that Cr. von Stunner take the chair.— Seconded by Cr. Lees and carried. New Councillor.—The Returning Officer reported tho election of Mr 10. T. Davey, vice J. Missen resigned, and Mr Davey, after making tho usual formal declaration, took his seat. The Council hero adjourned for Domain Board business, and on resuming the minutes of the last meeting were road and confiimed. Town Clerk.—There were only two applicants for the office of Town Clerk to the Borough, viz., Mr C. J. W. Barton and Mr Forbes Gordon.—Cr. Jones moved that Mr Barton receive the appointment of town clerk, treasurer, dog registrar, rate collector, and valuer for tho Borough of Hamilton.— Seconded by Cr. Davey and carried unanimously.—Cr. Jones moved that clerical assistance be obtained from Ist to 15th July. —Seconded by Cr. Lees and carried. Apology.—Cr. Knox, wrote, apologising fwr his absence on account of ill-health. Licenses. —The Clerk reported that there would bo a sum. of £102 coming to the Borough this year for licenses, four publicans' licenses at £40 each and two New Zealand wine licenses at £1 each. A Giuevance. —-Mr Dillicar again wrote with reference to his claim for extras for clearing Lots 405 and 411, which was dealt with at last meeting. The letter was received. Work's Report. — The Foreman of Woiks reported that during the month culverts had been repaired on the Cambridge road and several footpaths gravelled, and that the gratings, watertables, &c., had all been cleaned. He recommended that tho drain through Mr Melntyre's be cleaned out and staked up, and that he be allowed a miu for a day to assist in the same, and that a few loads of gravel be put at the end of the school bridge. The report was received and adopted. Assistance. —Cr. Tippen moved that a man be employed for a fortnight under the supervision of the Foreman of Works to clean out tho main drain, that one running from Galloway-streot to Cook-street to be, first undertaken. Seconded by Cr. Salmon and carried. Gravel. —ft was resolved to have twelve loads of gravel oil the Station Road whore required. PouniikkepEli's Report.—The poundkeeper reported for the month of May that there had been 13 head of cattle and six horses impounded. Tho fees collected being £1 His lid. —Tho report was adopted. Accounts.—Payments of the following accounts were authorised :—Le (.juesne, £1 3s Gd ; J. Pair, 10s; G. Leaver, £L ; R. Waite, l(!s ; A. Mayes, 13s !)•!; G. Mayes, £1 Is ; Dog Registrar, £1 2s (id ; The Waikato Times, £2 1.7s (id. Notices of Motions.—The notice of motion given by the Mayor re the Foreman of Works wages lapsed on account of his absence, as also did a notice by Cr. Knox re hours of meeting sufficient notice not having been given, and the Council refused to suspond the Standing Orders to allow of it being brought on. The £1000 Loan Money.—Cr. Jones gave notice to move at next meeting, "That a poll of the burgo-'ses be taken f l'ihwith to ascertain whether they would sanction the transfer of a sufficient sum from the. £1000 lodged as lixed deposit to the Borough general account, for the purpose of paying off the overdraft at the Bank of New Zealand at the expiration of the present term for which it was lodged, the balance to be returned to the Government and debentures for tho amount taken up ; and, in the event of tho result of the poll being a refusal to authorise the transfer, that the whole sum of £1000 be devoted to redeeming the debentures." This concluded the business, and the Council rose.

Special Meeting. A special meeting of the above Council was also held on Tuesday evening, the same councillors as above being present. The annual balance iiheet was returned by the auditor, apptoved by him with the exception of £10 10s for lawyers' retaining fee, for which there is no authority to spend.—The Clerk read the balance-sheet, and it was adopted
