TE AROHA
Hotel Licensks.— The annual meeting of the Te Aroha Licensing Committee was held on Saturday at noon, at the ; Courthouse, when there were present: Messrs G. Gallagher (chairman), Lipsey, Hetherington, Harris, and Heathcote. Air Lawlor was present as Licensing Committee Clerk, and the police, in tho absence of Sergeant Emerson, were represented by Constable Wild. Applications-were made by Mr and Mrs Isaacs fora license for a new house at Okoroire. Mr Hay appeared on behalf of the applicants, and withdrew the application by Mrs Isaucs. He pointed out wherein the hutol would be a convenience to tourists, and otherwise an advantage to the public. The bench, after retiring for a short titno, on returning, asked that Mr Isaacs be put ou his oath, and in reply to the Chairman he said he had never been through the Bankruptcy Court in his life. The license was granted. Applications for renewals of licenses were then dealt with, daring which Mr Ebert, of the Palace Hotel, stated that the licensee had agreed to withdraw an application for extension of time to 11 o'clock. The whole of tho licenses were granted, viz. : Hot Springs (A. A. Smith), Club (A. Downes), Palace (G. Ebert), Family (Annie Thompson), Waiorungomai (S. Smardon), Premier (M. Murphy), Oxford (l'\ Kose). Two per cent, on the licenses was unanimously voted to Mr Lawlor for his services as cleric to the commmittee. The bench then rose.
Town Boabd.—The monthly meeting of this Board took place on Saturday evening. Present: Messrs E. Gallagher (chairman), G. Ebert, G. Lipcey and J. Heathcote. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Tho following accounts, on the motion of Com. Ebert, seconded by Com. Heathcote wore passed for payment: —W. Wetherington, .£lO ISs 9d; R. Michael, £8 Is ; K. Pavitt, £3 7s 3d ; Te Aroha News, £5 3s Sd. In connection with the advertising account, the clerk (Mr Ahier) in a jocular way, said he thought he was fully entitled to something for the written advertising notices which for some time back he has posted in prominent places in the town. The monthly return from the poundkeeper showed a credit balance to the Board of 4s 3d. A written application from Mr Robert Mackie for a license to slaughter on Section No. 1, Block —, was read. ,Com. Ebert presented a petition, signed by residents in the neighbourhood against granting tho license, aud said he intended to support the the petition, Some clauses in the Slaughterhouse Act were read, which went to show, that it would be illegal to have a slaughterhouse in the position asked for. Com. Lipsey : Surely Mr Mackie does not intend to slaughter cattle in tho heart of the township, he can't be in earnest. Com. Ebeit: We have no option in the matter, but to refuse it. He moved, the application be deferred. Mr Maokie, who was present, allowed to speak. He sayp, "I am prepared to pay whatever sums may be fixed." Referring to the clause read in the Act, (he continued) the Act says, " within a mile of the Borough," this is not a Borough, Com. Ebert replied in this matter their powers were the same as those held by a Borough. Com. Lipsey: It in not a proper place'to have a slaughter-, house. Mr Mackie : I have been slauchtering all along for my own use. Com. Lipsey : You would be a nuisance to other people, it's not good enough. I second the resolution. Mi'Mackio: As the. law is, I can't sell a joint, lhave been slaughtering for the past few years and had to give away what we did not use. On it being put to tho meeting, the resolution was carried. Arrangement was made that the committee inspect some nocessary work in the district, and the meeting closed. Catite Sau:.—Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, there was a very good attendance at Mr McNicol's sale, held in Bradley and Co.'s yards, on Saturday, The cattle brought some very good prices, and I hear Mr Roche (the seller), was much pleased with the result. Potatoes fetched 7s (id per sack, and good apples, li'd per lb. Some horses were sold at very good prices.
