OHINEMURI.
La>l KEItTON Ml IX.—()n Friday last tho manager ot the OrownGold Mining Co. at ICaraugahiike, "took a run" out of the new Latnberton mill with highly satisfactory results. This mill is something after the style of the old berdan, but six steel faced balls are used instead of the usual simple drag or bill. TneOissell Gold retracting Company are erecting a similar mill at the La Monte furnace house, Karnngahake flat, in connection with their cyanide process, Mr McCombe, manager of the Ivanhoe and Truro claims, owned by Christchureh people, is getting very fair results, At present, th« Crown, the Ivanhoe and Truro are the only mines being worked on wages. Good results continue to accrue from the various tributes in the district.
Tkk.vt.mknt of 'Rkkkactouy Okks.—At Waitckauri the plant being erected on the Australian Gold Mining Co.'s ground is rapidly approaching completion, under the supervision, of Messrs Alfred Lockwood and Heighway, who are jointly supervising Mr Lockwood whose invention for treating refractory ores is becoming widely known is patenting the process all over the world. Mr Lockwood is to be congratulated on the strides he has made in his profession, and on the manner in which, while battling against the prejudice show to him by many pseudo-scientists, he has made his process an undoubted success. As soon as the arrangements for patenting have been completed in Germany and England, the syndicate in Sydnsy, which controls the patent, will erect furnaces and plants at various centres throughout these and other goldh'elds. I'itOHitK.ss at Waihi.— At Waihi, Mr Russell is laying himself out for a "big thing." Ho is getting control of all the water rights and creeks, and is buying up every available piece of ground known or supposed to be auriferous. As to the results obtained from the present workings, they are never divulged to outer barbarians, but it is believed that they are highly payable. There is no doubt that they are satisfactory, because similar work is being continued. A large number of men are now being employed on this portion of the goldfields.
OwiiAitOA.—At Owharoa, Farmer and party who recently cleaned up for 180 ozs. are again busy in getting out another parcel for crushing while there is plenty of water. A good deal of prospecting is being done in this district.
Maiiototo —Marototo, of which we all heard so much some 18 months or two years ago, is still dragging its slow length along, manned by about six men all told. I believe the manager, Mr J. H. Moore, is not at all in love with the prospects, although there is undoubtedly plenty of low grade ore in the district. It is a pity that during tho big Marototo boom some of the money which found its way into adventurers' pockets did not go towards the erection of a small battery. There would then have been some incentive to further prospecting now that Ichabod is written over the district.
Amusk.ments.—There have been a plenitude of amusements in Ohineinuri latterly. The Church of England concert which was an immense success was followed by the football concert and ball, and this by the Fredo Troiibadors on Tuesday last who after their Te Aroha tour return to Paeroa on Monday. Paeroa is noted for being a good show town, and so the Fredos found it, taking nearly £'20 in one evening. A concert, comedy, ball and dancing contest will be the next big event. I must not forget to state that Mr George Gapes, of the Waikato has been a great acquisition to our local talent.
