BOROUGH OF HAMILTON.
Ax adjourned meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tubs lay evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Mr Isaac Coates, in the chair, and Crs. Wood, Knox, Tippen, von Stunner, Jones, Lees, Bell and Salmon. After throe adjournments, extending from 7.15 p.m., the business was commenced at 8.3") p.m. S.u.auy. —In accordance with notice given, Cr Kimx moved, "That resolution No. 30 of Uie 12tli January, 1882, be rescinded, and that from the Ist July, ISBU, the salary of the Town Clerk, Treasurer, Hate-collector ami Valuer for the Unrinigii of Hamilton be £80 per annum." Cr. Knox said that sine;-, he had uiven notice to move the above, he had heard it generally .stated that £80 was too su.al! a salary to offer to getasuitableiua.il to do tlie wmk, and he asked the permission of the Council t" alter the £80 to £110.—Permission, as requested, was granted.—The motion as amended was then seconded by Cr. von. Stunner. —Cr. Jones moved, as an ainondin 'lit, that the remuneration bo £100. —Seconded by Cr. Lees.—Cr. Jones said that considering the present state of the finances of the Council, £100 was as much as they could afford, at least until the Borough got out of debt, and then if the work required an advance the amount might bo increased. —Cr. Lees said I he thought that if the Council gave £100 the Domain Board would give about £25, and I that would, he considered, be a fair reI numeration.—lt was explained that the Council could not take into consideration what salary the Domain Board would offer. —Cr. Wood asked if the office could not bo let by tender, as by this means they might bo ablo to obtain a good man for less than the salary proposed to offer. —His attention was called to No. 50 of the standing orders. —Cr, Tippen, in speaking in support of the motion, said that the Council wanted a good man to do the work, and they would have to pay him a good salary, £125 was about a fair sum to offer. —Cr. Salmon spoke in the same strain.-Cr. Jones, with the permission of his seconder, was allowed to withdraw his amendment, and the original motion was put and carried unanimously. Hnxsnouo' TkkhackDuaix. —The Works Committee reported that the only thing required is to lowei the cess pit near the Postoffice about G inches, and deepen the water table for half a chain at a cost of about two hours' labour. They consider that no benefit would be gained by connecting with Mrs UWynne's drain in Hillsboro'-street.—The report was received and adopted. "Ax Kvri.AX.vnoX."—Cr. _ Jones asked the permission of the Council to consider the resolution passed at last meeting with reference to "An Kxplanation." He stated that lie had not been able to attend the meeting on account of illness. —Cr. lviiox rose to a point of order, and moved that the Council adjourn.—Cr. von Stunner in seconding the motion, said he had been absent from the last meeting, or he would most decidedly have voted against the. resolution referred to by Cr. Jones, but he thought all parties connected with the matter weie to blame, Cr. .Jones for bringing newspaper correspondence into the business of the Council, Cr. Knox for bringing his motion forward, when Cr. Jones was not present to defend himself, and the Council for passing the resolution for the same reason. Tins concluded the business, and the Council rose.
