An enormous crowd, including tho Viceroy, assembled at tho Ballyganj Maidn at dusk. He tried tho balloon, and not finding it rise freely, ordered the parachute to bo taken off, and the balloon to belet go. Ho was last seen to be sitting in the sling at tho height of about one mile. A fresh wind was carrying bim towards the south-east iu tho direction of the Sunderbuds. Then, as it grew dark, the local authorities despatched telegrams to all the stations in that direction. Nothing had been heard of the balloon and its occupant. As Mr Spencer did not use a valve he had no means of descending.
