Whkn the salt combination was at first mooted, it was believed by many persons that such an arrangement would play into tho hands of the Gorman manufacturers, and this result, it is now said, will likely take place. A Liverpool firm, who export large quantities of salt, having received notice from tin Halt Union that this year the prices would be raised something like 29 per cent., made inquiries from Ifainbiiry with a view of seeing at what price the article could be obtained there. The result of the inquiries shows that, whilo Hamburg suppliers cannot sell at anything under the prico which is now being paid for tho salt in this country, yet they can sell at a figure about 20 per cent. below the price which it is the intention of the Salt Union to ehar.'.'R this y<ur. The linn in question has (lurinau miTclianN to compete with, and although they would much prefer to export the English article, tho advantage in price of the German salt will leavo them no choice. A decline in the demand for English salt would fall with great severity on Liverpool, as tho annual export from the Mersey has been enormous.
