OHINEMURI.

CHAiiriAiu.E Am Lkvt.—There is not much news of any interest to report this week. The Otiinemuri County Council held its ordinary monthly meeting on Saturday last, and a large quantity of business was got through, Mr .Tames Bailey, of the Auckland Agricultural Company, Waitoa, wrote, inquiring what right the council had to levy a charitable aid rate of Jof a penny in the Jtl. The opinion of Mr Miller, county solicitor, was read, showing the authority, and a letter was ordered to be sent accordingly. It is, however, rather lii.r.l on the Company who spend a lot of money on the making and maintaining of roads besides their county rates, that they should have to pay such a tremendous rate as this for such a badly administered law. The rate is equal to 7h per cent, of the annual value of the property. Such, however is the law.

Ax I.n'JL'.stici:.—Concerning this same Charitable Aid business, a little matter cropped up at the County meeting showing how lax is the administration of these matters. One of tho councillors who is tiie delegate to the Charitable Aid Board for tho Council, is also the contractor for tho supply of rations for the recipients of charitable aid within the district. A widow woman in receipt of rations sent a complaint to the Council that sho had sent her little girl with tickets for rations, and that the councillor in question had kept the tickets in part payment of an old debt, and had refused to give the rations as instructed. The matter was referred by the Council to the Charitable Aid Board. BoAitn of Rkvikwkhh.—The Board of Reviewers for the Property Assesment sat at the Paeroa Hall on Monday last, the re\iewers being Messrs W. Q. Nicholls (chairman), J. H. Monre and J. M. Robson. Mr Edwin Edwards, assessor, appeared on behalf of the Property-tax Commissioner, and also on behalf of Mr Jno. Hunt, assessor «f the Waitoa riding, Out of 70") assessments tl objections wero received, and reductions were made iu 20 cases. The assessment of the Thames Borough endowment at Waihou was reduced to 7s (jd per acre. Tho hearing of tho objections took the entire day, and each case was thoroughly sifted.

Mining Nkws.—ln mining matters things are still improving, A deposit of £000 has been paid by Mr Melville, of Auckland, for a Gl.isgow syndicate, on the Woodstock and Kenilworth mine at Karangahake. These will most likely pass eventually into the hands of the Crown Cold Mining Company Proprietary. Another large lot of machinery for the Cassell Cold Extracting Company arrived per ketch Elsie —ex lonic and Himutaka from England—last week. The plant is now approaching completion, and should be ready in about six weeks or two mr.nths for treating ore. About forty hands are now engaged at the Crown mine, and there is every sign of a prosperous time before tho district.
