Waotu Races.
The Waotu animal races were held last Wednesday on the course the other side of the Waikato river. About 300 people wero present, tho majority being Maoris. The races were held and earned through by tho Maoris, in proper European style. The swamp by tho bridge wan in a beastly state, about a dozen horses getting bogged in it. The course was also in very bad order. Mr C. Hitchman had the refreshment booth. Threo or four games of chance wero on the ground, and did a very fair business. On returning from the races Mr H. Barnett came in contact with a horse that was crossing the road, and was thrown heavily, breaking his leg. In the evening a dance was held, and was kept up well into the tmall hours of the morning. The excessive charges for entrance for the races kept many horse owners from running their horses, the entrance being about twenty percent., which was simply ridiculous.
