Mr Mitciiklsox li:lt for Otorobanga. by train thi.s morning for tlifi purpose of conferring with W.-ihiinui and other lending chiefs respecting the purchase of blocks of native land and tlie settlement of tho King Country. Mr Mitchelsou expects to return to-morrow, and will proliahly leave for Wellington by tlio southern steamer. The Chief Commissioner of Railways, accompanied by Messrs Hudson and Gootn, returned from Hamilton on Saturday. Today Mr McKerruw inspected the workshops at Newmarket; to-morrow he proposes to go over the Helensville line as far as Kaukapakapa. Very shortly ho will proceed south, via New PlytiMuitli, to inspect tho Waitaru line and the T.u-uniiki-Palmer-stone lino. The Trade and Labour Council passed a. vote of sympathy with Mr.l. C. Firth on the closing of tho eight hours' mill. Mr Firth, in reply, says the failure was not because the mill was worked on the eight hours system.
