PEARS' BEAUTY SHOW.

! Mr Barrett, the big man at Pears', has a load on his mind. He is goiug to start | a beauty competition. Already the nppli- ' cations for clamorous young ladies have | made their way to Mr Barrett. To a I Star woman he said:—"l feel like an Eastern potentate who is starting' a harem. The idea of controlling 30 lovely women for a fortnight is already getting appalling. This is the most daring act in my life." " When will the show be hold ?" ,l In the height of the Loudon season— May or June I should think—at St. James' Hall. There will, I think, be four prizes, ranging from £200 down to £•50. The ladies will give afternoon and morning receptions, and thero will be os, 2s 6d and Is days." " Where will they live during their exhibition ?"—ln an hotel." '' But they'll quarrel P"—" lam afraid they will. Each day I grow more impressed with the weight of my great responsibility." " What will be the qualifications of a beauty ?" " We shall be guided by artistic rules, We are going to try and get the help of several royal academicians, and other artistic people, but we are afraid to have a jury. The general public will decide by their votes who are the most deserving." "And their ages ?" " They will vary from 17 to 30 among young women, but we are thinking of having a separate class for old ladies. Encouragement should be shown to those who have taken care of their looks." " Shpll you allow paint and powder ?" "No—at least, I have just heard that 1,11 women make up, so we have not decided where to draw the line. But I won't pass a bad waist—a waist that has been spoiled by tight lacing. Every selected lady will have to be medically examined. We shall have no enormities, neither dwarfs or giautnsses will be taken. Competitors' expenses, travelling, and living, we shall pay, and their eveuing dresses will also be found."
