Cambridge.
The election of a committee for the Cambridge Public School was a matter of considerable interest to the inhabitants of the town, in consequence of the head mailer, Mr W. S.,Stewart, having resigned, aud the choice of someone to fill his place wjuld consequently fall upon those elected to serve during the ensuing twelve month*. The meeting was held in the Public Hall on Tuesday last at 7.30 p.m., about 40 householders being present. Mr Thos. Wells was voted to the chair, and he called upon Mr Sargent to read the minutes of the last annual meeting, and the committee's report and balance sheet for the past year The two last were as follows Com surncu's Kitport : The committee beg to report lhattbe average roll number for the twelve months ending, March 31st, has been 235.3, the average attendance being 172.2. The largest attendance was on the let May, when there were 21!) present. In consequence of the falling off in the attendance, the leaching staff has been reduced by one teacher. Tin annual examination for standards was held by Inspector Goodwin, in October, with the very satisfactory result of 90.2 per cent, of passes of scholars presented. Mr Goodwin reported that the work of the school was careful and neat, and that discipline, behavour and general tone were satisfactory. During the year, the Education Hoard ordered the use of Dr. Richardson's Temperance Book, and ITirst Lessons m Temperance in the public schools, but afterwards directed t.hat the compulsory teaching of this subject should be postponed until July next, so as to give the householders in each district an opportunity of pronouncing on the question at the annual meeting. The annual athletic sports in connection with the school were held in November, and weie very successful. In constq <:ence of the grant to the committee being reduced, they advertised for tenders for cleaning the school buildings and other necessary services, aud have again engaged Mrs M. A. Stewart, but at a reduction of £14 Us pec annum. The committee have thought it advisable to try the dry earth closet system in connection with the school, and they anticipate the best results from their use, but the experiment has been tried too recently to pronounce on its success or otherwise. The committee much regret to report that the school is losing the services of Mr W. S. Stewart, headmaster, he having been appointed'head master of the Grey mouth High Schol. During the time ho has been in charge of this school, a period of nearly five years, lie has conducted it with conspicuous ability.
