AFFAIRS IN SAMOA.
[I3Y TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORHESPONDKNM.] Auckland, Last Night. The Star correspondent at Apia writee stating that there are very disquieting rumours afloat to tho effect that a large German force will arrive there in a fortnight or three weeks to renew hostilities against Mataafa. It is generally believed that despite the Conference Germany is determined to wreak a bloody revenge on Mataafa for the death of the officers and men at the close of last year. Mataafa is evidently on the alert, tor warriors who had returned to their homes in Savii have been summoned in view of these rumours. The non-withdrawal of the declaration of war by Germany has a dcop and sinister significance. There is considerable sickness amongst the sailors on shore. Dysentery is very common, and about 150 at present are suffering from it. The appointment of Heir Steubel is regarded as an indication that Germany intends to resume the highhanded and violent conduct which created such consternation some time ago. Only a small German force is left behind, and as the declaration of war against Mataafa has not been withdrawn that chief might, if he choose, make matters very awkward For the Germans, and be strictly within his rights as a belligerent. However, it is morally certain he will return good for evil. The total Gorman forco is SO niaiiiicG and four officers.
